Workshop topics received by email:

  • Shale and petrophysics (Sawyers & Dewhurst)
  • Hyper-dimensional (dim >5) seismic data analysis/visualization/feature delineation (W. Dong)
  • Nader’s collection

1.      Exploration for Unconventional Resources (Gas Hydrates, Heavy Oil, Coal bed Methane, Shale Gas, etc.). At $ 60:00 + barrel oil, these things are being explored actively, and a lot of progress have been made. However,  many Technical Challenges remain.

2.      Seismic Inversion for Fun and Profit
The latest and Greatest can be discussed along with some advances in new generation of algorithms that take advantage of increased computer speed as well putting constraints (rock physics, e.g.) on the inversion engines to get convergence faster (and hopefully to better solutions).

3.      Reliability of Seismic Attributes after Depth Migration
How reliable are our velocities and amplitudes after Depth Migration? What do we need to do so that after Migration, we can use these attributes for better depth conversion, pressure prediction and Lithology and Fluid Analysis? Current work flow is clearly unsuitable. For example, Sub-salt drilling has shown that our images are mostly OK but everything else (T/D, pressure, fluid, lithology, etc.) is usually questionable resulting in very costly designer wells in GOM ($  100+ Million). There have been some progress, but significant challenges remain

  • From Xianhuai Zhu

Reservoir characterization: using low or high frequency?

Pre-stack depth imaging from rugged topography

  • The D&P committee traditionally hosts a Best of D&P Forum.  The Forum this year (2007) will focus on the geophysical challenges of heavy oil development and production, so our Best of D&P Forum workshop will address that topic.  Ideally, there would not be a competing workshop on that topic.
